A Day with Our Everyday Heroes: YDP Hero Day

By Shayna Brown

Throughout the day, the youth development program engaged with individuals who dedicate their lives to public service, they met local firefighters, learned about emergency equipment, and gained insight on how quick thinking saves lives. The firefighters also left the youth with a great memory, inviting them to play in the water spray from the firetruck hose – a moment that made the learning experience even more unforgettable. Police officers shared demonstrations and talked with the youth about safety, responsibility, and the importance of building trust within the community. Military representatives offered insight into service, teamwork, and leadership, showing the students how these values shape strong futures.

Events like YDP Hero Day help our young people see that heroes aren’t just in movies – they’re right here in our community, showing up, working hard, and making a difference for our people. The goal of the event was to inspire youth by connecting them with real people who serve with courage and commitment. By learning directly from these professionals, students gained a deeper appreciation for the roles that protect and support our community every day.
